Do you enjoy making crafts? If so, why not give beading a try? People of all ages are getting involved in numerous beading
crafts. Children will also enjoy this pastime. Start simple by creating something like a basic bracelet, or you can be more
sophisticated and perform lampshade work. However, no matter what you try, be sure and have fun with it!
There are many sizes and colors of beads to choose from, so be sure to choose the right beads for the craft you'll be working
on. Smaller beads are used for detailed work and larger beads for simple projects.
Here are some favorite ideas for the bead craft lover:
Beaded Bags
When choosing a matching purse for your outfit, your options just got larger if you are creating beaded bags. You can make
purses that are shaped like fruit, butterflies or even cartoon characters and you can make them in all shapes and sizes. You
might want to check for classes at your nearby crafts store, if this interests you.
You can even specialize in antique purses, which can be made to match a particular outfit. They are done similar to lampshade
beading work when adding the fringe along the bottom of the purse. A lot of beadwork purses are also accented with sparkly
sequins. Remember, your own unique style will make the purse just right for you.
Flowers
Another unique design that people are picking up is French Beaded Flowers. "French Beaded," a particular technique (not the
fact that the flower is French), is done by wrapping wire that has been beaded around a center point of beads. Any type of bead
can be used. If you're familiar with bead size, generally an 11/0 is used, although it's up to you as to what style you want to
get across while making your flowers.
Flower making from beads has been around since the 1500s when the Europeans practiced this hobby. You can find these antique
flowers in private collections and also in museums around the world.
Jewelry
By far the most popular beading craft is jewelry making. Necklaces, made with large plastic beads, are fun for children to
make because the bigger beads make it easier for them to handle. Bracelets and even tiaras are also a favorite for kids. Instead
of using wire, children use elastic string for their jewelry, which means the jewelry can grow with them.
There are many children's websites on the internet that give instructions to print out that can be easily followed. For the
older crafter, there are earrings, pins and chain bracelets/necklaces to create. You can print instructions or you can create
your own design.
Ornament Covers
Ornament covers are a way to add color and style to what otherwise is a plain colored ornament ball. They are made from either
one color or various colors and thread. Creating a type of pattern to accent the ornament can be a little tricky as it is
difficult to envision the finished project. It's up to you whether you want the ornament cover to be of a simple or complex
design.
Victorian Beaded Lampshades
One of the most time-consuming beading projects available is the Victorian beaded lampshades, which require a lot of patience
and attention to detail.
First, you will need to buy various beads and make a pattern from them. Be sure to choose colors that coordinate with your
furniture. Once you've decided on a pattern and how many beads it will take for each fringe, go back to the store and purchase
the amount needed. In case of loss or breakage, be sure and buy a few extra beads.
After purchasing a lampshade you place a trim around the edges, from which the fringe will hang. You will then sew the beads
through the loop and proceed to hang your fringe.
